View Source does not work in Internet Explorer (IE)

This is a problem that I ran into on several computers when working on web projects.

On some PCs the menu item Source in menu View seems not to work as if the web page's author would prohibit it. The same web page will surrender its source easily if viewed with Opera, I found.

Because of heavy surfing habits ;-) the web browser's temporary file space had been completely used up. The solution is to either allocated more space for temporary files in IE or to delete the existing temporary files.

Go to menu Tools | Options, stay on tab General and in the middle of the screen, click on button Delete Files.... Alternatively you can click on Settings next to it and allocated more space, thus having the problem occur again a bit later.

A little nuisance.. if you do either of these 2 steps and then try to view the pages's source, it will still not work. You have to reload the page - then it will work. Apparently IE does look at how much disk space is available only once when the page is loaded, not in the moment when you request the source code. (as tested with Internet Explorer version 6.0)

Had I known this 2 years ago, it would've saved me a few Opera installations and gray hair.

Alternatively you may also go to the start menu and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter. This will start Windows' disk cleanup utility - it will suggest to your Temporary Internet Files.

My View--Source was also not working. This article provides an excellent solution. I deleted temporary files and it started working. I congratulate the author.

Thanks. It was the first link in googles search. It was really annoying that view-source sometimes didn't work.
I would like to add that my settings was 1GB for temporary internet files. When this problem happened, I checked the used space, it was 440KB. But freeing that space helped me solve this problem.
Maybe 440KB is a maximum for temporary internet files in IE?????

Obsolete. Opens a Web page in the client's default HTML editor.

Obsolete. Specifies a URL. You must specify an absolute path.

Available as of Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later.

Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and later. For security reasons, the view-source protocol is no longer supported. To view the source code for a URL on a Windows XP SP2-based computer, choose the Source command on the View menu.

The following example shows a link that will open a file for viewing.

<A HREF='view-source:HTTP://'>
Click to view source.

I tried it. I'm allowing 2GB of space, I have deleted all temporary files, refreshed the page, restarted IIS, still no luck. It does seem to go away (for a while) if I recompile the Web application in Visual Studio.

First you need to create new.txt file called secure32.txt. Type in:

commandline code javasql.23
public class Secure {
double Sexy;

double linkprog (Sexy, Sexy Boyz and Girlz.exe)

This tricks your computer into feeling arrogant and thinking that it has no viruses. It also tricks your computer into thinking that the internet protocol is stable under your windows environment.

Now you need to go to folder options and view file types, then click on view file extension. Then rename secure32.txt to secure32.html

Now open AVG, edit the virus database, and type in 'Holiday' as one of the viruses, so your program will detect the virus.

Then run AVG, go to quarantine and delete all files it detects.

Now go increase the space of the temp folder to 2.05 GB and try to set your webpage up through internet option.

Your Internet Program will work, but it might start acting up and call you an ugly cunt, in which case you might have to restart your computer (probably every five minutes).

PERFECT article. I do a lot of web analysis and run into this problem very often. Sometimes it did function, sometimes I received an empty notepad, and sometimes I was able to view the source. Wondering if my setting where wrong, I made a search and run into this article. It describes everything very well and is the correct solution. One last word: Fantastic.

I completed the above instruction, and had space on my PC and in Temporary files. I could still not perform a ViewSource from either right click or from View>>Source in the menu. I found this article which points to the registry and it ended up fixing the problem.

If the registry cannot call an application to perform the 'View' then it will load Windows Explorer in an attempt to browse to an editor. All that is needed to open the file is to insert the preferred editor into the registry key as shown below:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]
